Description
The MikroTik FiberBox Plus is an outdoor networking device designed for fibre-based network deployments that require high-speed SFP+ connectivity in a weather-resistant enclosure. With four SFP+ ports, one Gigabit Ethernet port, an IP66-rated enclosure and RouterOS Level 5, it is suited to network installations where fibre connectivity, outdoor deployment and flexible network management are important.
For internet service providers (ISPs), wireless network operators, enterprise network teams and infrastructure installers in Kenya and across Africa, the FiberBox Plus can form part of a fibre distribution or network aggregation solution. Its combination of fibre interfaces and Ethernet connectivity provides options for connecting compatible network equipment over fibre while retaining an Ethernet interface for management or other supported network functions.
Four SFP+ ports for fibre connectivity
The four SFP+ interfaces support compatible SFP+ modules and fibre connections, subject to module specifications and link requirements. SFP+ technology is commonly used for high-speed links between switches, routers, servers and network distribution points.
The appropriate optical module depends on the required link speed, fibre type, connector, transmission distance and optical budget. Before deployment, confirm that the transceivers installed at both ends of each link are compatible with the fibre infrastructure and the connected equipment.
Gigabit Ethernet connectivity
The additional Gigabit Ethernet port provides a copper Ethernet interface for connecting compatible network equipment. Depending on the network design and configuration, this interface can support management access or another appropriate Ethernet connection.
When planning an installation, check the intended topology and the role of each port to ensure the device meets the requirements of the deployment. For larger networks, consider the number of fibre links, required uplinks, expected traffic and the capabilities of the connected routers and switches.
Designed for outdoor installations
The FiberBox Plus features an IP66-rated enclosure, designed to provide protection against dust and powerful water jets when properly installed and used within the manufacturer’s specified conditions. This makes it suitable for consideration in outdoor network environments where ordinary indoor equipment may not be appropriate.
Outdoor installations should still follow the manufacturer’s mounting and installation instructions. Use suitable cable glands, connectors and weatherproofing practices, and ensure that cable entry points are properly sealed. The IP rating does not mean that the device can be submerged in water.
RouterOS Level 5
The listed RouterOS Level 5 licence provides the software licensing level associated with the device. MikroTik RouterOS offers network management and configuration capabilities, with the exact functions available depending on the hardware, software version and device configuration.
Network administrators can integrate the device into a broader MikroTik-based infrastructure and manage it according to the supported functions and intended network role. Confirm the manufacturer’s documentation before relying on a particular routing, switching or management feature.
Applications for ISPs and enterprise networks
The MikroTik FiberBox Plus can be considered for outdoor fibre distribution, network extension projects, fibre links between buildings and other installations that require SFP+ connectivity in a protected enclosure. It may also be relevant to ISPs and network installers building or upgrading fibre infrastructure.
Before purchasing, evaluate the number of required fibre links, module compatibility, cable distances, installation environment, power requirements and the overall network design. This helps ensure that the device is appropriate for the intended application.
