Description
The MikroTik FTC21 Smart Fiber-to-Copper Converter is a managed networking device designed to connect fiber-optic infrastructure to Ethernet networks. Unlike a basic media converter, the FTC21 runs SwOS Lite and provides network management features for monitoring and controlling connected interfaces. It is suitable for internet service providers (ISPs), fiber network installers, enterprises and system integrators deploying fiber-to-Ethernet connectivity.
Available from Globikom Kenya, the MikroTik FTC21 offers a compact solution for extending network connectivity over fiber while retaining management and monitoring capabilities.
Fiber-to-Ethernet Connectivity
The MikroTik FTC21 features one SFP port supporting compatible modules up to 2.5G and two Gigabit Ethernet ports. This allows network installers to connect a suitable fiber-optic link to Ethernet equipment such as routers, switches, access points and customer-premises devices.
The appropriate SFP module must be selected according to the fiber type, transmission distance, wavelength and optical requirements of the network. Always confirm compatibility between the module and the equipment at the other end of the fiber link.
Smart Network Management with SwOS Lite
The FTC21 runs SwOS Lite, providing management functions beyond those available in a basic unmanaged media converter. Supported capabilities include interface monitoring and management, VLAN support, SNMP reporting, basic traffic shaping and advanced packet filtering using access control lists.
These features can help network administrators monitor connectivity, separate network traffic and apply suitable Layer 2, Layer 3 and Layer 4 filtering policies. They are useful in managed fiber deployments where visibility and traffic control are important.
For ISP and enterprise installations, these management capabilities can support more organized network operations. Configuration should follow the network design and the organization’s security requirements.
Outdoor-Ready Enclosure
The MikroTik FTC21 features an IP55-rated enclosure designed for suitable outdoor and demanding installations. This makes it an option for fiber termination points and network locations where equipment needs protection against dust and water jets under specified test conditions.
Select a suitable mounting location and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. IP55 protection does not mean the device is waterproof for immersion, so it should not be installed where flooding or submersion is possible.
Flexible Power Options
The FTC21 supports power through a DC jack or PoE input, with a supported input voltage range of 24–57V. The official specifications list 802.3af/at PoE input support and a maximum power consumption of approximately 4W.
The package includes a 48V power adapter, PoE injector and mounting accessories. Confirm the supplied accessories and power requirements before installation, especially when integrating the converter into an existing outdoor network.
Applications for ISPs and Enterprises
The MikroTik FTC21 can be used in a range of networking applications, including:
- Connecting fiber-optic links to Ethernet-based network equipment.
- Fiber access and distribution installations.
- Outdoor network connections for ISPs and WISPs.
- Managed fiber-to-copper conversion at remote network locations.
- VLAN-aware network deployments requiring monitoring and traffic filtering.
- Enterprise and campus network infrastructure.
Check the required port speeds, optical module specifications, fiber type and power arrangement before selecting the FTC21 for a project.
